Iglesia de la Merced, Granada (Sketches from Nicaragua)

This gorgeous weathered church has been the subject of several fires. Both Captain Morgan and William Walker tried to burn it. 

The view from the bell tower is one of the best in Granada.

While I was sitting and sketching the church this artist from Costa Rica has stopped to talk to me. He sat down to eat some fruit, chat, and sketch together.

I went inside since it was a Sunday morning hoping to catch a traditional Catholic mass. Instead I caught a Baptism ceremony. Only couples that were married in the church and were still together were allowed to approach to baptize their child. I felt very excluded already.
